About Me
I am a consultant and academic, specialising in Time Management, the Science of Forecasting & the Psychology of Time Perception. I am founder and director of the consulting company DM Planning Solutions (dm-planningsolutions.co.uk) I am associated with the Saïd Business School and Pembroke College at the University of Oxford. |
My interdisciplinary work focuses on Time Management, the Psychology of Time Perception and the Science of Forecasting. My research especially investigates the psychological and situational variables underlying "The Planning Fallacy", a term coined by Kahneman and Tversksy in 1977, which describes the well-known phenomenon that people often underestimate the time it will take them to complete a task. My research explores the reasons and possible solutions for this phenomenon from everyday-life to large-scale business projects that have often been prone to time and cost over-runs.
My research shows that the one of the most important variables contributing to the “Planning Fallacy” is control. My consultancy work uses these and other insights from my research to advise public and private sector clients on time management, forecasting and schedule delay prevention/mitigation.
I have been teaching at the University of Oxford for the past four years. I lecture on the science of forecasting and planning, the psychology of time perception, and research methods as part of the executive MSc Major Project Management (MMPM) and Custom Executive Education academies at the Saïd Business School Oxford. I am also affiliated with Pembroke College where she is a lecturer in Study Skills and Time Management for undergraduates.
I completed my DPhil (as well as my MSc & BA) at the University of Oxford, working at the intersection between Experimental Psychology and Major Project Management.
While a DPhil student I won 2nd place in the University of Oxford 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition and represented Oxford at the national 3MT Semi-Finals. Below you can see my 3MT presentation.
